I knew two men growing up. I'll call them Sam and Todd.

Sam was easy to be around. Genuinely warm, quick to laugh, the kind of guy who'd pick up the check before you noticed it had arrived. He wanted everyone in the room to be okay.

Todd was warm too. But there was something underneath it you couldn't quite name. Not coldness. More like a floor. You always knew where you stood with him.
